The Value of Hard work and Sacrifice by Alexa - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

The purpose of an education is to teach us the value of hard work and sacrifice. I’m sure many students have learned this, too. Whether it is just one subject or school in general, it’s not always easy to pass. Sometimes the material is hard to understand, we give up, and not care about the consequences. I know this is true because I used to be like that, until middle school.

I wasn’t always interested in school and my grades reflected that. I knew the importance of school but I just couldn’t seem to care enough to work harder, especially in math. I thought getting C’s was good enough, not realizing my full potential yet.

In 6th grade, my math teacher recommended that I receive tutoring because I was struggling in class. At first, it made me feel dumb compared to the other kids but then I found out my friend was going to tutoring, too. We were tutored by two college students and not only did our math grades improve but so did our grades in other classes. I learned how to study better and the tutoring really boosted up my confidence. My teachers began to notice and would comment on my improvement which always made me feel great. I was now a student who wasn’t afraid of school or asking for help when needed.

If it wasn't for my loving parents, teachers and the tutors, I don’t think I would have even passed high school. I had little motivation to do well school or take it seriously. Although I was embarrassed to have to go to tutoring, I’m happy I did because my attitude about school and my grades completely changed when I saw what hard work can do. Instead of hanging out with friends I was studying, completing all assignments and even reading ahead so I could be prepared beforehand. I still practice this now that I’m in college and working.

This taught me the importance of hard work, sacrifice, and balance which applies to all aspects in life. I’ve learned how to manage school, work, and my free time because I learned that if you want to accomplish any goal, it takes hard work and sacrifice.
