Dream to be Different by alex - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

"To be great is to be misunderstood." In modern times it seems our society has become obsessed with the concept of "perfection." We show standardized tests down kids throats, and trying to compact as many pieces of mundane information into their crammed little brains. I would teach teachers that intelligence comes in a plethora of ways and that grades, g.p.a., and S.A.T. scores should not define an individual. Teachers, adults, everyone should learn to stop measuring kids by meaningless numbers, and instead of crippling adolescents confidence should embrace their uniqueness. Some of the best professors I had were vivid, passionate but most important they were tolerant. They understood that every juvenile goes their own pace, and they never belittled those who were slower to finish the race.

I wish we lived in a world where individuals were praised for their unique characteristics and eccentric personalities, rather than be out casted like the Untouchables in Hindu society. I pray for a day when teachers laud students because they’re different, and are celebrated for their accomplishments not pinned against one other based on a few measly numbers. I would teach tolerance. Plain and simple. Tolerance towards artists, tolerance towards jocks and tolerance towards brainiacs. One day I hope we live in a world where kids learn they are special and realize their potential to do great things in this world, only then will the dreamers really be able to dream.
