Looking Deeper by Alex - November 2021 Scholarship Essay
Everybody knows the most hated class in school is math, but maybe there is more to it than we think. Math is done in a certain way and while there are online tools that can help finish the problem in seconds, teachers always make sure homework is done by hand. While this is viewed as tedious, maybe this is teaching us skills needed for different things.
I remember my seventh grade teacher explaining this to the class clearly. Most kids brushed it off and continued on but her speech has stuck with me for five years. Every day I figure out the problems in different ways and even when I get a problem wrong I get to look and see how I could have done it better. There is a reason math is used all the way through our entire school career. Math class is seen as others by just getting it done and over with, but maybe there is more to math than we all think. There are life skills that need to be learned about problem solving and finding ways around everything. Even when we get problems wrong, math teaches us how to figure out what we did and how to analyze where we went wrong.
Math is seen as a tough class that gives lots of homework by many students. While it is a given that we take math and all the attention is given to the other classes math is the backbone of school. Math teaches problem-solving skills and allows students to gain the knowledge needed to explain why they are right and how they got the answer they got, meanwhile teaching them to figure out if they were wrong and how to fix it. Even the main topic of math is important because we use numbers everyday and we are always needing people with math skills in the workforce.
