Why school shootings are still relevant by Alejandro - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

Over the course of American history, there have been many great speeches. Speeches are a medium in which ideas are communicated effectively to the people. Speeches usually raise awareness on important topics that concern the public. In a world that has an endless cycle of issues, it is imperative that we address these issues that affect our daily lives. One important issue that I would address towards a school-wide audience would have to be on school shootings. School shootings are an important topic because they affect our schools and youth.
In the past three years, there have been more than 160 school shootings across 38 states. School shootings happen very frequently, but a lot of them go unknown to the mass media. It is important to address an issue that affects the safety of our schools. I would like to bring up this very sensitive topic in order to ensure that people become more aware of this controversial problem that negatively impacts our schools.
In addition, these events affect our youth. School shootings have ruined the lives of many kids and teenagers. They have left them traumatized and fearing for their lives. I feel that it is necessary to address this issue in a speech in order to prevent kids from having to go through such a terrible occurrence.
Overall, I feel that the topic of school shootings would be the best topic to discuss in a speech. School shootings happen on a frequent basis, affecting our education system in a negative way. They also affect the mental state of our youth, leaving them devastated. School shootings are definitely a topic that is worth discussing
