How Education Has Shaped Me by alan - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

Education is a major part of our lives as human beings because it helps us understand the world and the life which inhabits it. Education helps us discover who we are and what we are capable of and, more importantly, it unites us as human beings by helping us understand each other. Throughout my academic career, my education has not only helped me find my passion, but it has also shaped me into a well rounded individual by teaching me important life lessons. The life lessons that I have learned throughout my academic career have molded me into the person that I am today. These life lessons include being responsible, respecting others, and being a team player, all of which I will elaborate on in this essay.

To begin with, education has molded me into a responsible individual who understands and takes accountability for his own actions. Throughout my academic career I was given a variety of assignments with strict deadlines. The teachers gave me and the rest of my classmates ample time to complete these assignments and turn them in on time. However, I have to admit that there have been a few instances where I procrastinated and didn't work on the assignments until the very last minute. This usually resulted in a grade that was less than what I would've gotten had I put more time and effort into the assignment. Of course, there was no one to blame but myself. This has taught me to take accountability for and be responsible for my own actions, because no one else will.

Secondly, education has made me into an individual who respects people regardless of their background. When you go to a public school, you can expect to get a mixture of people with different backgrounds. Education has shed light on these different cultures, religions, genders, and more and has made it easier to interact with, get along with, have respect for and understand people who come from different backgrounds. With such a diverse group of people, education has taught me to respect everyone regardless of their background because we are all human at the end of the day.

Finally, education has also taught me the importance of being a team player in order to complete an assignment. Of course there are going to be times when I'm not going to get along with the people that our on my team, but I've learned that putting our differences aside and "taking one for the team" will benefit everyone. Throughout my academic career, I've learned that school, and more importantly life, is easier to get through when you work on a team.
In conclusion, education has shaped me into a responsible individual who respects others and who is also a team player. While my profession and passion will change throughout my life, the life lessons that education has taught me will stick with me forever.
