The Key To Achieving One's Full Potential by Aina - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership is one of the most important character traits that an individual must develop to succeed in future endeavors. Whether it be leadership through academic life, clubs, or music, these skills will be essential for the success in the rest of an individual’s life.

College is an extremely competitive environment, with students and faculty working to push their education and discoveries to premier levels. Not only is leadership necessary for college success, but is also promoted throughout students’ education in college. Since I envision myself becoming an innovator at global organizations such as the World Bank, alumni and business connections are necessary for my success. Without leadership throughout this process, I will lose many opportunities to meet successful individuals. As an ambitious multicultural female, I strive to incorporate my Catalan, Spanish, and American backgrounds into my education. Forming part of the highly educated student body and participating in college global education and study-abroad programs, will force me to think outside the box and develop my own ideas. College’s emphasis on becoming leaders in the field will allow me to develop the leadership skills I need to harness my multicultural and acquired economics knowledge for future endeavors. These character developments are applicable to all students, as without connections with professionals and triumph when competing with other individuals, they will not be able to explore their full capacity.

In the classroom, students that stand out and apply the material to their daily lives will promote their understanding of lectures and connections with professors to outstanding levels. This achievement will aid the students to develop their education at a much faster rate than those who fail to lead. In my college education, I will apply the subject matter to my Catalan cultural background. By prompting discussions of the differences between cities around the world, such as comparing New York City’s economic activity organization with Barcelona’s, I will take lead in this exchange of views. As an ambitious Spanish-American, multilingual female, I will have a unique perspective contrasting those of my fellow classmates.

While studying in college, numerous activities such as those organized by school clubs will be available to students. Membership and eventual leadership in these clubs will better the individual, as only a select group of students is able to enact change and improve clubs to the best of their ability. Based on my participation in the Catalan movement for independence from Spain in high school, I can see myself founding a club to spread awareness of minorities worldwide. Many countries have citizens who revolt due to economic depressions caused by the government or by outside forces, and I want to represent those people as a collective rather than as individuals. I envision that through this club, students will apply their academic knowledge to these real-world situations. I hope to have the opportunity to study in a premier city and financial capital of the world, as it will greatly facilitate my ability to acquire speakers to present to my club and to gain a rich participation and support amongst the university’s community.

Participation in after-school activities such as official music or sports departments in university also allows for leadership opportunities. Although these are group achievements, with numerous students working together, only few players are selected for awards. In music there are outstanding musician awards and leaders of instrumental sections. Likewise, in sports there are awards for “most valuable player” and for the captains of the team. Success in these fields while attending university can propel student’s careers to participate in higher-level groups, or even to earn future job opportunities.

Although some may state that those who do not lead in college have still achieved success, when comparing those to the numerous accomplished professionals that took initiatives and lead in college, the latter surpasses the former by leaps and bounds.
