Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Why or why not? by Aiganym - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

It seems like students these days are under the impression that they can breeze through college as if it was high school, get a degree just like that, and live happily ever after. However, if they want to succeed in their studies and gain useful knowledge that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives, they will need to use a few skills to do it. Our ancestors used ancient skills to survive the harsh life style they had. Today, we use other skills to succeed in our modern lifestyles. In order for students these days to succeed in college, they need to know and practice leadership skills.

In ancient times, success and survival walked hand in hand. In order to survive, man had to learn how to make weapons, and build fire. Learning basic skills helped the earliest man survive. Our founding fathers new many skills as well. George Washington didn’t become the first president of the United States of America on accident. During his time serving as a general, he practiced many leadership skills such as war strategies, and public speaking. He was a great general, so the early Americans trusted his leadership skills to lead the entire country towards success, which was freedom for them.

Today, we use skills such as relaxation to get rid of stress. The whole world uses writing skills to communicate with each other, or to vent on social media websites. Money is very necessary to survive in our world today, so knowing and practicing skills such as basic accounting will help anyone succeed in the lifestyle we have today.

Connecting back to education, students need to realize that college isn’t a joke. Wild parties, and drunken nights won’t help to achieve that degree. Instead, students need to focus on their decision-making skills, research skills, critical thinking skills, self-management skills, and public speaking skills in order to be on the right track for success in college.

Leadership skills are used everywhere in this day and age. From running a country, to an army, to a household, or even leading a study group, leadership skills are needed for success. No matter what success may be to any prospective student, knowing and practicing leadership skills will help reach success in college.
