What AVID has done to me by Adriel - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

Avid is an organization I have been apart of for quite some time now. I first joined AVID in 8th grade just to be with my friends. I did not think about how this has positively affected me. Starting AVID in middle school was very detrimental to my learning because it sent me in the path of getting good grades. I was not serious about school in middle school but AVID motivated me to do well in my classes and that followed into high school. I learned many strategies as taking notes and studying and the whole Tutorial Request Form system when we will help each other out with classes. This is not just a program to help us get to college but I also formed a family with the whole AVID program. They say to surround yourself with people with the same goals and AVID was just that for me. Going on college visits with the class and just going through difficult classes together just bound us into a very tight family. Some times I sit back and wonder what I would be doing after Highschool if I did not join AVID because without AVID I would have just been going through the motions with no plan. This program has really opened my mind to many more opportunities I would have thought were too far for me to reach. AVID made me improve academically and socially as in surrounding myself with people with similar goals. I was also the AVID president in my Freshman year of high school which was a very special experience for me. Being the leader of such an important program meant a lot to me and I learned even more in my time in the president position. In conclusion AVID helped me tremendously with many factors and I would not be where I am without AVID.
