Now Is The Time To End Cyberbullying by Adelynn - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

In today’s world social media has taken over the lives of many, especially teenagers. Social media has both positive and negative aspects to way it is intended to be used. One of the most negative effects that have come out of social media is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is defined as the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature.
Cyberbullying is a fairly recent problem and has come into play a lot through out the last few years. Many people believe that cyberbullying is not that huge of a threat but cyberbullying is just as bad as being bullied in real life. There are many ways to avoid and stop cyberbullying. Most social media websites and applications have features that allow users to block others from viewing and messaging accounts. By blocking a person there is no longer ways to be bullied by that specific person on the internet. Another way to avoid cyber bullying is to simply stay off the websites where there is going to be bullies. This method may not seem ideal but if push comes to shove there are times where it is best to remove yourself completely from the situation. In contrast, you should not have to stop living your life because of bullies so if you are to stay on these websites turn the negatives into positives. Use your social media to spread love and show others that social media is not all about destroying others. There are many ways to stop cyberbullying by spreading the word and allowing others to be informed on the issue. If an account is being used in a positive way and inform others there can be a reduction in the amount of bullies on the internet. By informing others on the issue this can unify the people on the web. I am sure there a thousands and thousands of people who have been bullied on the internet. People who have experienced this can come together and share their stories and help those who are facing being bullied currently to overcome their situation. Initially, the point I am trying to get across is that by speaking up, spreading love, and allowing others to know they are not the only ones going through this situation there can be a huge force of people preventing more cyberbullies from striking.
Cyberbullying, just like bullying in real life can have major affects on a person. Being bullied on the internet is just as intimidating in real life. Even though there is nothing physical happening over the internet there are still many ways to hurt a person. Most cyberbullies send degrading, demeaning, or threatening messages. Cyberbullies can publicly post about someone else to degrade them or scare them. As a person being bullied this can drastically hurt their self esteem, scare them from wanting to go out, and even make them want to end their own lives. There is no reason for one person to constantly go out of  their way to make sure a person feels like they should no longer be alive anymore. But, sadly cyberbullying has made many people feel as if the only option to avoid this problem was to take their own lives. Cyberbullying can also cause many different types of depression. Bullying on the internet needs to end, lives need to stop being taken, and people need to be encouraging others instead of bringing others down.
Cyberbullying has personally affected teens because teens spend the majority of their days on social media. Social media has made an image for how teens should look and act. By setting an unrealistic standard I feel as if teens insecurities are brought out. Cyberbullies and bullies in general usually have a reason why they feel the need to bring others down. Most the time this has to deal with their own internal struggles and insecurities. They take how they feel about themselves and lash out at others. Since teens are the majority of the population using social media they are the ones most affected by cyberbullying. In today’s world more of how we communicate is through a screen rather than in person. Cyberbullies are usually teens who are cowardly and insecure who tend to sit behind a screen and bring others down. Teens are affected so badly by cyberbullying because their generation lives behind a screen and there are people who would do anything to see others as miserable as themselves.
The on going problem of cyberbullying is an issue that can be stopped if teens are willing to speak up and speak out against these bullies. Many teens are taking their own lives because of this problem. The idea of someone taking their own live is sickening. Knowing how hard it is to be a teen already should unite many users. By spreading love, handing out random compliments, and showing someone there are people who care is just a tiny step to help stop cyberbullying. The majority of the population using these websites, social medias, and applications are teens. With this being said, teenagers need to stand up against this problem and be the light in the dark by setting an example to stop cyberbullying. It is in the hands of fellow millennials to put an end to this very serious problem.
