Mr. King, the King of Physics Teachers by Addison - March 2021 Scholarship Essay
Junior year physics is probably not the class that everyone dreams of, and neither was I for that matter, but it didn’t take long for me to see that physics helps describe how the beauty of the world works. Gravity could describe almost everything in the universe, forces demonstrate how hard I would need to punch my English homework to put a hole in the paper, and so on. It opened my eyes to how simply we could attempt to describe the motion of the universe, but most importantly, just how much we don’t know. Mr. King was a physics teacher that breathed life into the subject and inspired me to think about the world and its many problems. Not only this but to become the best student I could be. Mr. King pushed me to find a love for physics and more specifically mathematics in which I plan to major. It’s not easy to make an A+ in college-level math and physics courses simultaneously, but with motivation from an amazing teacher, made it my mission to make him proud.
In the classroom, Mr. King would use real-world demonstrations, and with particular humor, make each scenario whether it be bouncing a basketball across the room, or firing a marble at a paper monkey, or maybe even playing hockey with a broom and bowling ball, he always kept the classroom interesting, inspiring, and innovating. These demonstrations were all it took to make me look up to him and see how he cared for his students and their success in the subject he loved so dearly. Mr. King has pushed me to create bigger goals for myself, leading me to want to not only major in mathematics, but pursue a doctor of philosophy and allow me to share with the world the wonders of mathematics and physics and how it is the very key to our Universe. Simply because of a man who cared so deeply about his subject and students, he has revived my academic journey and has pushed me far beyond what I thought myself capable of. Mr. King will have made me a world-class mathematician.
