Why Attending College Is Important by Addison - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
When I was a young girl my grandma always told me that education is the most important thing in this world. She told me time and time again that education was the one thing that no one could take away from me. The older I've gotten and the more that I have experienced the world we live in today, I understand why she constantly pushed me to go to college. I believe that attending college is important because of the future and life experience that will help young adults turn into adults.
Being a woman I have come to terms that attending college is the best option for me to invest in my future. It is a proven fact that men make more than women in almost every career choice. Most of these women even have a college degree. If women didn't go to college to get a degree, they would be making a lot less money and would have to work a minimum wage job or have to rely on someone else for support. I have experienced this in my own family. My mother is an EC teacher and my dad is a truck driver. My dad makes a lot more money than my mom does, but the crazy thing is that my mom has a college degree and my dad does not. Although it is important for women to attend college, it is also important for men to attend college too. Even though my dad makes more money than my mom, the physical labor and the hours he puts in are very tiring. My dad wakes up at 12 am every morning and gets home at about 5 pm every evening. If men choose not to go to college, they will probably end up working in construction, truck driving, or other labor jobs. Some options for people who don't want to go attend a 4-year university is a community college, certificate programs, or law enforcement. I think that these options are very important in our society because someone needs to fill these jobs, especially law enforcement. Overall, I believe that attending college and getting some sort of education is very important because no one can take that away from you. You can use that education to support yourself and your family for the rest of your life.
Another reason that I believe attending college is important is because of the life experience you gain from it. People go into college at 17 or 18 years old. In other words, people go into college as teenagers. I know for myself that I am not ready to support my self on my own. I would have a hard time figuring out the ways of the world. When we leave home and go out on our own we have to grow up. We finally leave the nest and fly away to a college campus full of new adventures, people, and temptations. We have no one to tell us what to do or how to act. The people we are while attending college is all up to us. This freedom can be a good or a bad thing. It can shape you into a strong independent person who is ready for the world or it can send you right back home to your mama. Being young adults, we have to learn how to control and use our freedom. We have to know when to study and when to go out. We have to pay bills, buy food, and to be responsible for ourselves. This newfound responsibility will help us grow up. Without going to college and being on our own, we will not know how to function as an individual. College helps mold us into adults ready for the work world.
In conclusion, attending college is important because it helps us in the future by allowing us to work decent-paying jobs and by helping young adults turn into adults. I truly believe in what my grandmother told me, education is the most important thing in this world because no one can take it away from you. She is right and I am so excited to attend college in the fall and get my own education.
