Leadership: Be Not Afraid by Adam - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Leadership skills are necessary for success in all facets of life, but sometimes fear plays a role in how people view leadership. In high school, some students are afraid or embarrassed to assert themselves as leaders. They are often too worried about what their peers think. In high school, some people look on leaders as nerds, teacher’s pets, or too assertive. College should be a chance to change that.
College should allow students to grow and explore new roles, and leader should be a role they are willing to try. Leadership skills are necessary in college for many reasons. First you need to lead yourself. You will need to be in charge of your own education -- from scheduling classes, asking for help, working to pay for tuition, and learning how to juggle work, classes, and a social life. However, being a leader doesn’t mean you should be afraid to acknowledge your weaknesses. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or get additional help or training.
You will also need leadership skills as you work in a classroom or small group environment. Don’t be afraid to step up and be a leader. Leadership skills will help you see the big picture of projects. Leadership skills help to set the group’s vision. These skills will help you to make sure work is delegated, all voices are heard, collaboration is occurring, and feedback is used.
College is a great testing ground to practice your leadership skills so you can succeed, not only in college, but when you get into the work force as well. However, don’t be afraid to share your knowledge. As Ralph Nader said, “The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.”
