Impacts That Make Me Who I Am Today by Abishai - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

I am a part of Riverside Church’s youth group in Fort Myers Florida. However, the youth group is more than just a youth group to me. To me, that group is my foundation. I have met my friends and role models, I’ve met people who care about me, and I’ve met people who push me to be better at my youth group. Every time I’m there I feel energized and encouraged as well as full of laughter and joy. I’ve become more involved over the past months by stepping up to lead worship on Sundays and Wednesdays. Taking that simple step to get more involved has impacted me greatly, I feel more confident in every situation I am in and I feel more comfortable talking to others and letting my personality show in front of everyone.
Riverside has had many impacts on me, but the most noticeable impact is the friends I have been blessed with. I recently moved from Wisconsin to Florida and finding friends was a struggle. I want the people around me to be positive influences on me and it seemed almost impossible to do that with the people I was surrounded with at school and on the football team. My family started attending Riverside Church a few months after we moved and from then on the transition got easier and easier. My youth group has done such a good job at including me and making sure I am emotionally stable. One major help has been the small group that I was placed into. The group is full of other 12th grade boys that are making their way through life just like me and it has been a joy to walk with them through trials and successes.
Another very positive and notable change that was impacted by my youth group is my personality. After I moved and joined the youth group I have watched myself become more confident, unique, assertive, and happy. I was content with my personality before I moved, but looking back at the past I feel glad that I moved and started again. I have had to rediscover who I believed that I was and that pushed me to redefine who I believed I wanted to be. Riversides youth group has impacted my personality by influencing what is important to me and keeping me focused on what I believe is true. It has been extremely nice to have the help and care of my youth group devoted to making sure I am ok.
