The Purpose Of Education by Abigail - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

This topic could be approached from a variety of angles, but I believe the purpose of education is to become an expert in your field of study so that knowledge can be used to help better the lives of those in this world who are less fortunate. When I first began thinking about my future, I knew I wanted to do something to make an impact on the world around me. I have always had a passion for the sciences. That passion combined with my work ethic and genuine care of people, I believe has set me up to live a life of purpose! I began thinking about what it would be like to be a doctor. This idea really appealed to me and after much contemplation, this idea became my dream. I attended the National Youth Leadership Forum: Careers in Medicine this past summer and met some amazing and passionate people who truly believe they can make a difference! This experience drove me to push myself to help more than a doctor does. (Big statement, I know!) I still wanted to be a doctor but I wanted to help people in less fortunate situations, such as low-income areas, abusive relationships, and even those abroad with less access to medical care.

The older I got, the more I learned about the current situations all over the world through attending various talks with friends at Middlebury College. As I learned, the more I was bothered by the state of health care and lack of simply helping those with so much less. I became dedicated to living my life through the mindset of making a difference! This difference may not mean changing the entire world. I believe making a difference is enough if even one life has been improved due to my efforts! I am determined to make a positive impact on those who truly need it and to live my life with a purpose and dedication to those who are less fortunate!

Without the proper education, none of my dreams would be attainable. Since I have been lucky enough to be able to attend school and receive an education, I feel that it is necessary for me to use that knowledge and create more good in the world!
