Success in 2021; A Mini Memoir by Abigail - February 2021 Scholarship Essay

Success is a word that carries many definitions based upon an individual's perception. In earlier years, success would be tied to major milestones in one's life. For example, buying a home, getting married or starting a family. Although those are vastly impressive, I personally view success as a simple label attached to my achievements. Depending on the day the weight of that label will vary. On days when my mental health is struggling I will feel successful and accomplished if I can manage to get through my entire hygiene routine and ready for the day. Or, on a more “regular” day, I’ll perceive success as being completely caught up, or even ahead, in my classes.
When it comes to success in the college atmosphere, I would describe success as making the most I can by learning from everything around me. Expanding my horizons through all aspects college has to offer. Not just in the classroom, but through events and organizations. Being a Resident Advisor as a first-year student has made me more aware of the on-goings of my college campus and has connected me to staff and students that I would otherwise not associate with.
If I were to graduate with only my diploma, I would consider my college experience as unsuccessful. It’s not just about getting my degree and teaching certification. It’s about pursuing education in all walks of life. Social interactions, networking and different cultures are just a few examples of topics that I have learned more about since becoming a college student.
My major goal that I have been striving for since Senior year of high school has been to graduate college without debt. This is a daunting task considering my parents can’t assist me in any financial means. Even if I don’t completely fulfill that goal I would still consider myself a successful graduate if I could honestly say that I did the best I could everyday. The sheer fact that I have this continuous strive for success is an accomplishment of success that speaks for itself.
