Legacy by Abigail - March 2020 Scholarship Essay

In ten years where do I see myself? Far, far, far, from home. Or rather I see myself going home. I have lived in Fargo for about two years and after some consideration, I decided to stay here and go to college at North Dakota State University. However, I also decided to stay here because of a specific program they have at NDSU. They have a Dual Major program which will allow me to get two majors in the time that it takes most students to get one. When combined with all the college and AP courses I have taken in my high school career I will be able to grade in under four years with two degrees in my hands. I will be majoring in Social work and family and child development before attending graduate school to get my masters.

Where I will be attending I haven't completely decided. That could change depending on any scholarships and I am hoping to do well enough to go for free. But I will go to get my masters in social work. After I have that I want to go home. I want to go back to Anchorage, Alaska. That's, where I was born in, lived until three years ago. I miss my family but that's not reason enough to return on its own.

I want to work with the children in the Matsu valley to ensure I will be able to provide them with a loving and safe home for children to grow up in. Children are our future and I want to spend the five years after I graduate ensuring that every child will get the same privileges I was blessed enough to grow up with. Every child deserves a family to grow up with that loves them, that prioritizes their well being and their education. And the second I graduate with my masters I want to give back to the community that took care of me. That raised me.

While in graduate school I will also look for internship opportunities to help expand my resume and go straight into a career path in and around Anchorage. From there I will spend my time identifying people in the community who need help, helping people cope with some of the stressors that they face at home and sometimes even removing children from dangerous situations. I will also ensure that once children are relocated to better homes that their new caregivers take care of them properly and that their situations improve.

I wish to spend my next ten years bettering my self and achieving a higher education. After that, I will undoubtedly spend my career improving the lives of children especially those incapable of defending themselves.
