Different Dreams but Same Desires by Abigail - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
Truly magnificent, the human body performs at least hundreds of tasks daily, vital for survival. Because of its complex structure, the body can form itself into unique shapes and creative poses. Fascinated by how the body could display different figures, I became a dancer at a very young age. Dancing was my passion, my drive. I absolutely loved to get lost in the music and find myself along the way. My dream as a young, six-year-old girl was to be a dance teacher.
I remained a dancer from when I was four years of age until the summer of entering junior high. Throughout my dancing experience, my passion for the sport never dimmed, but my patience had continually faded throughout the years. I grew frustrated by the company always wanting more money and so many of the dancing classes being shaped by connections and social status. Girls became increasingly meaner, and I became increasingly quieter, remaining at the back of the studio, silently struggling to remember how to lose myself in the music.
After deciding to discontinue dance, I joined the Davis lacrosse team. Upon attending lacrosse practices regularly, I considered being a lacrosse coach as my future potential career. However, this idea quickly changed during my sophomore year.
On the first day of school, I walked into my third period class, still nervous and intimidated by the new and massive high school. I quietly found my seat and pulled out the needed materials for the class. The bell rung, indicating the beginning of the period. A beautiful and smiling lady walked to the front of the classroom, and in an excited voice exclaimed “chemistry is cool!” From that moment on, I knew I was hooked. Titrations, equilibrium, stoichiometry, and other elements fascinated me so intensely that I took another year of chemistry following my sophomore year.
Just recently finishing my junior year of chemistry, my career pathway is set on the course of a chemistry major. I have my teacher, Mrs. Laub to thank for giving me a burning passion for the science I love. Originally wanting the career of a dance teacher, to setting my goals for becoming a chemist, I have experienced that passions change – in large part due to the course of education.
Teachers open student’s eyes to different fields of study. They inspire the desire to try new pathways and experiences. Education later shapes the sometimes seemingly silly goals of young children to something they still love, while making it attainable. Education has changed my dreams, but in no way has diminished my desire to make an impact in individual’s lives
