Making A Student Ready for the World by Abby - November 2021 Scholarship Essay
I believe that home economics class deserve more emphasis than it currently receives. Home economics class teach life skills that will be used in everyday life. Instead of learning how to conjugate verbs, graph linear equations, and calculating the molecular mass of hydrogen peroxide, which they will most likely never use, they could be learning to take care of themselves and their families.
Home economics instruction teaches young people the vital skill of learning to cook. In learning to cook, they learn about nutrition, planning meals, how to read a recipe, measure correctly, cooking terms, how to make a shopping list and time management. I can’t think of a more useful subject for kids that are leaving home and starting their own lives on their own.
Another advantage of home economics class is the introduction of basic sewing skills. Obviously, sewing is a dying art, but learning how to mend clothing, replace a missing button, hem a pair of pants is very useful. With the sewing, students also learn how to properly iron clothes all of which would save time and money for kids entering adulthood.
Managing money by creating and following a budget makes good financial sense. Whether students go on to become multi-millionaire or work at a fast-food restaurant, basic financial literacy gives a foundation of how money works, how to make money work for them and guides them on how to manage money and debt wisely.
These skills are simple, and are things that all people should know, and be able to do. These skills were taught in Home Economics classes, in the past decades, and now it is rare for teenagers to possess these skills, because they have not learned them, but all are essential to daily life. Having a class that will teach you all of these skills and making the class mandatory, will help to learn basic skills that will help you not only at home, but after high school. Being self-sufficient means to be able to help yourself without others and be independent. I believe that with this class the skills you will be taught could help you in everyday life, from cutting a vegetable to sewing a button. These are basic skills and are needed to do everyday activities and repairs. However, these skills may help students with particular situations in the future, at least one of these skills will be necessary in most careers for their future.
