Time Traveling...Just Not in the TARDIS by Abby - June 2014 Scholarship Essay

I have been an avid writer since the fourth grade. It was then that I began writing plays. However, when I moved into the fifth grade, I began writing what is known as “fan fiction.” Fan fiction is when a novel, short story, etc. involves characters from any movie, television show, video game, or other novel/work of fiction. Fan fiction even includes writing about famous people or figures; for example, there is an entire site dedicated to stories just about the band One Direction. So, as the years have progressed, I have become better at my craft and I have even experimented with original ideas. Not only are original ideas extremely complicated, but they also require an immense amount of patience and research, especially if the book is about a significant historical event.

If I was to write a book about anything, it would be time travel. Part of this time traveling appeal comes from the television series "Doctor Who." However, I would not have my main character travel to the future and meet aliens or ride on spaceships; I would write strictly about him/her traveling to multiple historical periods in the past. Since I was a young girl, the past has always been fascinating to me. My favorite historical periods deal with ancient civilizations, the history of England and its kings and queens, and American history, specifically the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War II. There is something mysterious about the past and its happenings; we as its descendants try to decipher and unlock the secrets that it holds. In spite of this, we were not actually there and cannot be one hundred percent sure about how history REALLY happened. That is what fascinates me.

So, my protagonist would stumble across a way of traveling to the past. As any history lover would do, he/she takes advantage of this discovery and travels with a sidekick to all kinds of significant historical settings. Due to my status as a hopeless romantic, I would have to throw in a bit of a love story along with all of the events; I might even write the dreaded “love triangle.” All in all, my story would have a mix of science fiction, history, action/adventure, romance, and a theme. The theme would be something along the lines of appreciating the advances of modern technology and medicine. It would be a plot that could appeal to all kinds of readers.
