Stay Focued by Abbey - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

The year of 2016 will be full of endings and new beginnings for me. That is why my New Year’s resolution is to stay focused as a student.

Second semester of senior year is filled with activities and events like senior ditch day, prom, senior picnic and other out of school events. It is easy to catch “senioritis” and slack in school. The “I’ve already been accepted to college” mentality is common towards the end of the school, year. You’re ready to graduate, for summer vacation and to move on into the next stage of your life. While all of it is happening so fast, school still needs to be the top priority. Whenever I start to slack or think “Do I really need to do my homework tonight?”, I think of all the things I could potentially lose because I began slacking off like scholarships and college acceptances. After I remeber that I am right back on track.

After graduation is the time I can let loose and have fun, but then it is back to business. First semester of college is filled with new opportunities. It will be my first time living on my own and making every decision for myself. My mom won’t be there to ask me if my homework is done or to tell me to study. This year it is all up to me. There will be many distractions but my GPA and schoolwork have to come first. I am not at college to go out every night and party, I am there to receive a degree and that is exactly what I am going to do. I am going to stay focused and excel in my classes.

Staying focused is the key to success as a student and that is my New Year’s resolution in 2016.
