Role Model by Aaron - October 2019 Scholarship Essay

On July 6th, 2017, my parents decided it was best for the family to move from Palm Springs California to San Luis Obispo California. I didn’t understand why at the time, but it was the start of a new chapter. The first person I believe I talked after seeing our potential new home was Dean Moore, one of the best family friends and by far the best neighbor I could ever ask for. When we first moved started moving in he came right over and let us know that any help we needed we could go next door and ask for him. Unfortunately my parents didn’t trust anyone in the area so it was roughly a month or so that went by until I found myself talking to Dean in his driveway. It was strange for me at first talking to him, not because I was a young kid going to middle school, but because he was the only adult that has ever talked to me as if I was more than just a child. One day he asked me, “What do you want to do with your life?” and I told him I had no idea. So that day I went inside my room and stared at the ceiling. I must have done that for hours before I thought about what kind of a future I would like. When I saw him again I told him, with somewhat confidence, that I wanted to be a doctor, and he asked if I was sure, because he would love to see that play out. After three years of having a great neighbor, who certainly wasn’t shy about inviting us out, I was in a rough time of high school and started feeling like my life was losing meaning. Well somehow Dean noticed and asked what I want to do with my life. I told him, with determination, that I wanted to help people. He told me I needed to help myself first and once again he wanted to talk with my about my life and make sure everything was going alright. On May 25th, 2019, I found my neighbor and told him what had happened in my life. I had a great job working as an EMT in an ambulance, and I had received my grade of 97% in microbiology. I gave him my complete assurance that I am going to college to get my Nursing license, and I gave him a promise that I will help as many people as I can with my life. That I want to save their lives and spirits, just as he did for me.
My neighbor Dean Moore is one of the closest friends I have and has inspired me through many things in my life. Knowing that he built a very successful business and has made so much for him and his family while still being as humble as he is to everyone really inspired me to be someone like him in the future. He has always been there when I had questions in school and when he couldn’t help me he always knew someone that could. Dean Moore is one of the biggest inspirations to me academically.
