I hold BA in Mathematics and Economics Summa Cum Laude from the American University In Bulgaria and with Disciplinary Honors in both majors. I also hold MA in Economics/Econometrics from CERGE-EI and MS in Quantitative Finance from Boston College, which correspond to 5 calendar years I spent across two fully funded PhD programs in Economics/Econometrics and Finance. All my graduate-level coursework is at the Doctoral level.
At Boston College, I was also a TA in Fundamentals of Finance for two semesters in a class of 100-150 students. I worked with students both in class and one-on-one.
My teaching style depends on individual student needs and background. If a student is new to the topic and has little to no background in the area, my style is to break down the concepts to their most basic elements and explain how these elements interact to give the full picture. I tend to ask questions in the process to keep students engaged and make sure they follow. The mastery of any topic always starts with the mastery of its most basic building blocks.
If a student has solid background in the area, my style is to guide a student to an understanding rather than directly provide answers to their questions. This way, they not only get help with the topics they find challenging, but also learn how to recognize what they understand about a problem and what they do not, and how to navigate complexity and vagueness to arrive at answers themselves. This approach is far more effective in terms of understanding and retention than passively hearing explanations.
I expect the students to let me know in advance with as much detail as possible what they need help with. This makes lessons much more productive and learning - cheaper (because students take more out of meetings per dollar paid).
