Tom
Certified Tutor
I am a recent graduate from Ohio State University with a degree in Middle Childhood Education as well as a Masters in education. During my time in school, I developed a passion for education and for becoming a positive mentor for students. I experienced many different types of students during my time student teaching and tutoring, and I found that the most rewarding moments for me were when I got to work with individual students or small groups of students. I truly enjoy the privilege of watching students grow both in academic skill and self confidence. I am excited for the opportunity to continue witnessing this growth as a tutor.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe in a student-centered approach to teaching. My role as a teacher is to help students reach their full potential, and I believe that all students have the ability to achieve and attain success. My hope is that my students will develop confidence in their abilities, and a lifelong love of learning.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I will get to know my new student and learn about their interests and hobbies, as well as their learning style. My goal will be to get to know the student as a learner, so that I can appropriately direct my teaching style in a way that will benefit each student.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become independent by helping them increase their problem solving skills. Students who are able to actively search for a problem and brainstorm multiple solutions will gain confidence in their abilities as a learner.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I can help motivate students by showing them how much progress they are making and connecting their knowledge to real-world situations and issues. Students who can see the relevance of their knowledge will be motivated to seek more and more information.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would change up my teaching style. There are always multiple ways to teach certain content, and each student is different in terms of what method will reach them most effectively. I would continue to seek out new methods until the student has mastered the skill or concept.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I find that it is helpful to build a good relationship with the student. It is important to have a good relationship so that both the tutor and the student are willing to be honest about needs and expectations.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I can help to engage a student by connecting the content to something that is important or interesting to them. In math, most subjects can be easily connected to real-life situations; I can find out what excites my students and connect it to the mathematical content.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Building a student's confidence occurs by showing the student their prior successes. I can show the student that they have prior knowledge that is relevant to the new skill that they are learning. I can also offer the student help and slowly take myself out of the picture in order for the student to see themselves become successful with a new subject or skill.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Evaluating the needs of a student comes through careful observation. I must pay close attention to what specifically is tripping up the student in order to identify patterns or issues that continue to come up. After identifying the needs of the students, I can address the common issues and help the student to improve.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I can adapt to the needs of my students, carefully identifying what teaching strategies work best for the individual student. Each student will have slightly different needs in terms of what teaching style they prefer and the level of involvement that they will require from me. My job will be to alter my teaching style to meet the needs of each student.
