As a mathematics teacher, creating a sense of excitement about mathematics is something that I am really passionate about. I believe that mastery of mathematics is crucial for young people as it will build a foundation for success in almost any career field. When I teach math, I strive to create an atmosphere in which students feel they can share the difficulties they face as well as persevere through a challenging problem. I am very enthusiastic about and I would like the opportunity to make learning for others as enjoyable and fulfilling as my own has been. As a tutor, it is my role to provide opportunities for all, regardless of ability, and to ensure that everyone has a positive experience.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I strive to create a constructive learning atmosphere where students are allowed to show what they know and how they learn. This enables me to use different teaching styles and learning strategies that motivate. All learners have the opportunity to excel in different areas of mathematics. Forward-thinking styles and adaptability will challenge all my children to achieve. I am often pleased when my students are solving problems and gaining confidence in mathematics, which they could not previously conceive.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session, my students will be given an opportunity to share their knowledge base. In addition, students/parents may share their expectations for the session and what they hope to accomplish through our mathematical interactions. Lastly, we will create a plan of action. This will include my expectations and how best we will attain our goal(s).
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
My students will become independent learners through self-assessment. A technique I use is to develop the habit of "solution check." That is, through back substitution or proof, show that the final answer obtained is correct or incorrect. This will help students develop a trust for mathematics, and confidence within themselves.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Mathematics is often seen as a difficult and boring subject. I find giving students immediate feedback and showing how their mathematical competency is growing this is a great motivator.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
When students show difficulty in learning a new skill or concept, I ask them to articulate or show their understanding or interpretation of the problem. After, we revisit the area(s) of difficulty in order to gain mastery.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
When students are struggling with reading comprehension, sessions will be planned with activities that cater to this difficulty. Activities such as cross curriculum reading and use of context clues will be incorporated.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
At the beginning of the learning encounter the teacher needs to set the tone for learning. As such, I have found teacher clarity to be one of the best techniques to use for new experiences. It serves to have students trust that the teacher has the competence to take them, safely, on this learning journey.
