I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Kati

Certified Tutor

Hello! My name is Katharine, but I generally go by Kati. I have a strong love for all things math and physics related, but most of all I love teaching. I have been working as an educator for many years, throughout my entire undergraduate and graduate student careers, and have recently been appointed to a full-time teaching position. I obtained my Associate's Degree in Engineering from Quinsigamond Community College in 2008, and my B.S. (2011), M.S. (2015), and PhD (2018) in Nuclear Physics from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. I joined the College of Arts and Sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida as an Assistant Professor of Physics in August 2018. Previously, I have been employed as an adjunct instructor of Physics at Daniel Webster College in Nashua, New Hampshire from 2013 to 2016, and at the University of Massachusetts Lowell from 2015 to 2016. A passionate educator, I have been involved in tutoring a broad range of students in Physics and Mathematics since 2002. I especially love tutoring algebra, calculus, and freshman-level physics, including mechanics and electromagnetism. In my free time, I enjoy volunteering at my local humane society, helping with TNR (trap-neuter-return) efforts to help control the local stray and feral cat population. I also provide foster care for kittens and cats that are sick or need extra socialization before being adopted into their forever homes. I have an eclectic taste in music; I love collecting vinyl, and am always searching for new and interesting artists and groups! I also enjoy baking, knitting, and scrapbooking.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Anyone is capable of learning. The key ingredients of a successful student is confidence, perseverance, and a desire to learn. My goal is to help awaken and instill these qualities in my students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

A typical first session usually consists of a discussion including parent and student to assess what the student's individual needs are and how best I can meet them. It is important to understand the goals desired by everyone to assure that we are all on the same page and working toward a common end.
