What is your teaching philosophy?
Learning is the key to everything. Understanding and connecting with each individual is the path to learning.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Take the time to get to know the student as a person. Also, rather than focus on what the student does not know, instead focus on what the student does know.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Make learning interactive.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Set goals. Tailor the learning to the student.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Start by focusing on what the student does know. Have the student explain and show what he/she knows. This can build confidence.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Slow down the process. Perhaps read the passage more than once. Focus on the big picture; ask the student to state in one simple sentence what the passage is about.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Get to know the person first. Have the student explain what he/she does know. Have the student use as many senses (speaking, listening, writing) as possible. Use physical objects for math.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Relate that subject to something that the student does like.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Have the student explain the subject. Have the student complete exercises in the subject.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Repetition. Build on success.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Baseline demonstration by the student in the subject. Talk with the student to understand what the student knows.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Some people are more verbal. Some people are more auditory. Some learn by repetition. Some learn by using physical objects. Tailor the teaching to the individual.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Physical objects for math. Varying reading passages for reading comprehension. Images to bring history alive.
