I believe all students can learn, it just takes the teacher and tutor to find how that student can best understand the content given to them. That's my goal with working through Varsity Tutors, to find that place of understanding with students to help them connect with the content they're learning.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that every student can learn. We as tutors have a great opportunity to find the right method to engage a student to grasp a concept. It is our job to find the right key to unlock the potential in every student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Beyond seeing what content they need to learn in the subject, I'd like to give the student a pre-assessment based upon personal interest and hobbies so I can find ways to connect the material to prior experience and things they're interested in.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Giving students answers or simply helping with questions will only assist students with those types of questions. Giving the students strategies for determining what skill needs to be utilized for a problem will help that student grow into an independent learner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Making sure students have connectivity to real world examples and interests will help with motivation.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

All students have different learning styles. If the student is having difficulty learning a skill or concept, it's important to try to find the learning style that will best support the student's grasp of the concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I'm a math tutor, so, surprisingly, reading comprehension is a real issue when understanding word problems. I would show that student key words in the problem to help convert that word problem into a digestible math equation.
