What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first tutoring session, I like to start getting to know a student by asking a series of questions about themselves, their educational history, and their learning styles. I become familiar with student expectations and help students brainstorm short term and long term goals.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I am very enthusiastic and excited about student learning. I love to motivate students by being honest and emphasizing the positive outcomes that could arise if they are able to get past certain boundaries.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

If I was to help a student struggling with reading comprehension, I would encourage the student to read a sentence or paragraph aloud, and then discuss the meaning of the passage with me. I feel this can help students practice thinking about what a passage means immediately after reading it.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by talking to them about their concerns and struggles. If they are unsure what their needs are, I like to go through an assignment or two with them to understand the student's thinking process.
