I believe that every student can be successful. There are always ways to modify teaching styles so that each child can fully grasp a concept and feel confident in whatever subject area they are having trouble with. I fully support the use of manipulatives whether they be online or tangible in real life. Practice without understanding the concept will not make perfect. Clear understanding of the subject matter will make students successful.

I would spend time getting to know the student, what their likes and dislikes are and what their learning style is. Once I've determined how to best teach the student we would spend time going over the subject matter to find where the confusion is and work to correct it.

Confidence is key to creating an independent learner. The student needs to be confident that they can use logic and critical thinking to solve a problem. The more clarity they have in a specific subject matter the more confidence the student will have.

I would provide small personal successes by breaking down the problem. If a student feels successful, often it motivates them to achieve more.

I would try to figure out where the disconnect is. What is it specifically they aren't understanding? Sometimes a small break in that area is needed to stop the student from becoming frustrated. Many times I have to look at the problem through the eyes of the student and try to figure out what style of learning will best help them learn the skill or concept. Perhaps they need a more hands on approach so they can "see" themselves solve the problem. Maybe the student learns well through writing, so physically writing down the steps or process can be beneficial.

It depends on the age of the student and what kind of books they are reading. In general I have them look at the book or story and have them try to describe what they think will happen based on the pictures, title, etc. I also have them stop after every page or two and summarize what is happening. We go over the story at the end so I know they understood the words and weren't just reading the text.

I would find out what they are interested in outside of school and try to relate what they are learning to that. For example, if they like sports and are struggling with reading, I would try to find books involving sports they are interested in. If they need help with math I would use sports to teach the subject they need help with (baseball statistics to help with fractions/percentages, football to understand yards, etc).

It depends on the subject. For math, I would have them tell me how they are solving the problem as they are doing it. I would give them variations of the problems to make sure they didn't just memorize the one answer, but, instead, know the process and how to get the right answer every time.

You take small steps to help the student be successful. The more often they feel they have success the more confident they will feel. It can be overwhelming to tackle the entire problem area but by breaking things down into smaller parts it seems easier and allows for small goals to be met.
