Certified Tutor
I am currently a first-year medical student.
I decided to pursue this difficult and lengthy path only after facing several challenges along the way. Throughout my childhood and my high school career, test-taking always seemed to be a challenge. I pushed to get the best scores I could, but something was wrong. I had a lack of direction. I needed a mentor.
When I had my first mentor, I wasn't sure he would be the right one. We worked together for some time, but some of his characteristics were not compatible with my liking. After about two more mentors, I finally selected an intelligent, organized, and serious mentor that was heavily invested in my success. To have a mentor that is invested in your success is a fantastic feeling. Suddenly, my motivation increased, my grades improved and I was accepted into very good colleges and programs. That was my goal. I couldn't reach that goal without my mentor. My mentor taught me more than just English, Writing, ACT/SAT, he taught me humility, determination, and confidence. For these reasons, I am still in contact with him today.
As a tutor-- mentor-- I will help my mentee achieve their goals (academic and mental). I will work with them hour by hour to the best of my ability to deliver what is necessary to achieve their goals. Education matters and your knowledge is tested through your scores, so they matter. The only way to win is through effective collaboration, mental determination, and hard work. I want to work with my mentee to figure out what I can do for him or her.

What is your teaching philosophy?
As a tutor, I will help my student achieve their goals. I will work with them hour by hour to the best of my ability to deliver what is necessary to achieve their goals. Education matters and your knowledge is tested through your scores, so they matter. The only way to win is through effective collaboration, mental determination, and hard work. I want to work with my student to figure out what I can do for him or her.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Understand how my student learns best. Understand where my student is having trouble.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Provide them with recognized studying strategies. This will vary based on the topic, but generally, flashcards, practice questions, and asking themselves questions about their notes will help information retention.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Asking my student to make and accomplish short-term goals, then move on to long-term goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Based upon what type of learner my student is, I would provide the necessary resources in conjunction with my teaching to help my student master the skill or concept. Within my teaching, I would generally provide examples and step-by-step methodology.
