Certified Tutor
I am a graduate from the University of Michigan- Ross School of Business. I tutor in mostly math subjects, but also tutor in essay writing/editing as well as ACT and GMAT. I have tutored athletes throughout college and also tutored in high school. My tutoring style mostly involves asking leading questions so a student can figure out the correct answer on their own with some guidance. Outside of academia, I love to cook, hang out with friends and watch sports.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would give the student practice problems to see what topics they may be struggling with the most so that we can focus on those first.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by having them go through the incorrect answers and try to discover what they did wrong.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I typically use practice problems, since I believe they are the best way for a student to build the skills necessary to understand the concept.
What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that a student learns best by the teacher asking leading questions, instead of just giving the student the correct answer.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have found that practice problems to start are the best way for me to gauge the student's skill level and what they are struggling with the most.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would relate the practice problems to situations they can relate to in real life. For example, in math problems, I would use objects like food, electronics, etc., to get them more engaged with the problem.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I like to have the student explain their thinking to me in order to ensure that a student understands the material. That way I can better understand the way they think, as well as if they are getting it correct.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I always compliment students when they get an answer correct, and also when they correct their mistakes.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate a student's needs with practice problems, and by having them speak their thoughts out loud.
