I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

When I have the time, tutoring is one of my favorite things to do. It's first a great excuse to meet new people in the Lawrence area, working together towards a goal makes it all the better. I grew up in Michigan and moved to Lawrence in 2013 for grad school, and I love it here. It's a pretty small town, so we've probably crossed paths at some point at the farmers market, at the monthly Free State Story Slam, or on an outdoor basketball court. And I hope we can make it work so that we'll be able to get together to master whatever class or standardized test you're working on.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I firmly believe that doing well in any class or test does not just come down to "being a math person" or just "always sucking at standardized tests." Yes, we all have different abilities, but research shows that what it really comes down to is the amount of time you put in to something. And not just nodding your head to the tutor or copying down notes; the time you spend has to be effective and intentional. That's where I hope I can come in. I have taught different subjects and tests for different test companies, so I've been able to practice a lot of strategies that maximize potential. It might be hard to believe, but with enough time, this stuff starts to become enjoyable, especially once you start seeing yourself doing well. That's my philosophy when it comes to working with students: showing you the tools and how to use them, and helping you realize you're just as capable as anyone else.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session, like all others, is about you. Before we jump into any practice, I want to learn about how you relate to and think about the subject or test we're working on. Without that history, we won't be able to create the proper plan moving forward.
