Certified Tutor

I graduated magna cum laude from Catawba College in 2013 with a GPA of 3.78. My degree is in Elementary Education and I have minors in both Spanish and English. I consider myself a well-rounded individual with a number of varied interests. I taught third and fifth grade for two years. I have tutored Spanish and Writing for three and a half years and love to tutor any English-related subject as well as any level of Spanish. My teaching philosophy is engaging, challenging, and encouraging my students is how they are able to reach their highest potential in what they need to learn. I am a big encourager with a desire to provide positive reinforcement. A passion of mine is building relationships with middle school and high school girls in hopes to help them see their identity and beauty does not come from society’s standards but on the One who created them. I was summer staff at a Christian camp for the past five summers, and grew many relationships with quite a few girls that came to the camp. It was there that I developed a passion for helping these girls grow in who they are with the natural gifts and talents given to them and help them succeed in those ways. I also spend a lot of my time serving in church, leading small group Bible studies and conversations about God.
When I was in high school I was given an opportunity to go on a mission trip to Ecuador. As I am not inclined to athletic ability (really, I’m just not a good athlete! :) ) one day I sought out some kids that were not playing soccer like the rest of the kids at the park we were at and I tried conversing with them, but only spoke Spanish. At the time, my Spanish was rather limited. I understood what they said to me, but took a lot of effort to respond in Spanish back to them. I gathered they wanted to learn English, so I taught them how to count to ten in English! The looks on their faces of accomplishment, success, and excitement were enough to drive a passion within me to teach. It was then that I discovered my love for teaching. I had frequently been asked to tutor kids around the neighborhood or kids in the church when I was growing up, but I knew then that’s what God was calling me to. I taught third grade in the public school system for two years, and absolutely loved it. At present I am dedicating much of my time starting a ministry geared to middle school and high school girls to encourage them to be who they are as God created them. My partner in ministry and I will go to different churches and put on conferences and retreats to reach these girls.
In my other spare time I love to play the piano and do anything outside! While I am not a coordinated enough person to be a successful athlete I do enjoy playing sports. I also love hiking (I lived in North Carolina for six years and was not far from the mountains!) and kayaking when I have the time.
