I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

One of the most rewarding accomplishments is helping learners realize their full potential in life; especially when a student struggles academically, it’s a real victory to witness that moment when a student realizes positive self-growth. I have been rewarded with many of these occasions throughout my tenure as a secondary English classroom teacher. I have especially enjoyed teaching ACT preparation classes because students would often return after the semester and share their exciting news about meeting their score goals.

Since I earned my Master’s in Education from Lesley University, I have developed a whole repertoire of strategies for delivering differentiated instruction that meets the individual needs of my students. A student-centered approach is imperative when working one-on-one with individuals. English, literature, and writing are the three areas that I have the most experience and fun teaching.

When I am not in the classroom or tutoring, I am hiking in the bluffs of Wisconsin or chasing after my young son. I also enjoy reading historical fiction novels and traveling to historical sites.

What is your teaching philosophy?

One of the greatest pleasures in teaching is achieving a strong level of mutual trust; when a struggling student opens up and feels a sense of worth, real academic achievement can occur.
Many students need different opportunities for educational growth: mainly one-on-one attention. This allows a teacher to recognize and nurture the multiple intelligences of each student and then discover approaches that have yielded previous success. Being an effective educator means being flexible enough to take risks and try fresh, creative approaches to new challenges.
