I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I have been fortunate to call many places my home over the past five years: Boston, where I attended Tufts University; Santiago, Chile, where I lived as an exchange student; Trujillo, Peru, where I worked as a music teacher for several months; and finally, Honolulu, Hawaii, the home I am happy to return to after my time away.

While at Tufts, I double majored in Peace and Justice Studies and Music (violin), with a minor in Latin American Studies. Most people find this a strange combination - I, however, would like to believe that all three subjects are quite interrelated. It has been exciting to connect with people from many different places who think likewise.

It is amazing to think that, had I not chosen Spanish as my second language as a seventh grader, I would not be the person I am today. Somewhere between learning greetings and struggling with subjuntivo, I acquired a skill that took me to discover unbelievable parts of the world, meet amazing people, and become part of some wonderful cultures. For that, I am forever astounded and grateful, and hope that I can share some of it with you, too.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Making the student excited about what he/she is learning - making it about gaining knowledge that will help in the long run, not just for the test.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

For all of us, it's about finding a balance between being challenged and being validated, and between enjoying oneself and also gaining practical knowledge.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

It's not always about patience and re-explaining ideas; it's also about finding different ways to explain concepts to different people. I would be flexible and responsive to my students' learning styles.
