Spanish 2 Tutoring FAQ
Spanish 1 provides and introduction and overview of the beautiful language of Spanish. Spanish 2 increases the difficulty and complexity of the material, while expecting students to continue to make use of the elementary knowledge they gained in Spanish 1. Students are introduced to more tenses and are expected to differentiate between their proper usages. While many of the verbs introduced in Spanish 1 follow the rules of conjugation that students concurrently learn, Spanish 2 begins to present frequently used words that don't follow these patterns and must be memorized individually. Students continue to increase their Spanish vocabulary as well. All of the words they learned in Spanish 1 are still fair game and can appear on homework, quizzes, and tests.
Along with the expansion of student's skills in these various areas, they are expected to have more involved conversations. No longer are conversations simple exchanges of common phrases that often follow rigid formats. Students are expected to express their own opinions about subjects with confidence, if not ease, in a foreign language. Reading and writing skills are expected to follow suit and to develop more complexity and depth. Students are expected to being speaking and writing as naturally in Spanish as they do in their native language. While they aren't expected to be fluent, they will need greater proficiency than in the previous course.

Recent Spanish 2 Tutoring Session Notes
Today was our first session, and the student is beginning a summer online course. We reviewed furniture vocabulary and began discussing travel vocabulary. He learned the subjunctive tense and was able to grasp the main idea quickly. We discussed creating flashcards to review vocabulary. He knows what pages to finish studying before he takes the Unit 1 quiz on Friday.
We went through some of the student's Spanish notebook and I quizzed her on food and place vocab words, and held short dialogues with her to practice. I also explained the difference between "el Papa" and "la papa"-- the Pope vs. potatoes!
Today, we finished up with formal commands and started the present subjunctive. The student was quick to understand the concepts and practiced a lot online. Very productive. We are hoping to finish up before she goes to school.
We talked about object pronouns and a little bit about reflexive pronouns and why they are similar. Today was productive because the student was able to review direct and indirect pronouns and their uses within sentence structure. We practiced with exercises from both his textbook and other materials. He has notecards that include details about using direct and indirect pronouns.
Initial session today with the student went well. It appears that he needs a good foundation regarding how to conjugate verbs and also gain experience in attaching the correct verb conjugation with the correct pronoun (tu....eres /you....are). We came up with a graphic way to remember the endings so that appeared to be a good start. We did a little bit of writing, oral, and discussion regarding some simple sentences that incorporated the verbs, and some of the material that he learned last year in Spanish 1, and discussed the reasoning behind the sentences.
Review of some basic Spanish I vocabulary and regular verb conjugation
Went over the difference between ser and estar and question words (que, como, quien, cual, etc.)
Practiced English-Spanish and Spanish-English translations and tweaking pronunciation
