What is AP Physics 1?

AP courses are a way for high school students to get a collegiate learning experience before graduating and moving onto college. There are a number of different AP course options that students may decide to take. One of these courses is AP Physics 1. The work that your student does in this course could even earn them college credits. However, in order to earn those credits, your student will have to pass the final exam that is administered at the end of the school year.

AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based offers the students who take it the chance to learn more about the fundamental principles of physics. While taking their course, your student will spend time studying Newtonian mechanics, work and energy, simple circuits, and much more. This class also gives the students who take it the opportunity to do hands-on laboratory work to investigate various phenomena. Students will want to save their lab notebooks because the colleges that they apply to may ask to see them before granting the student credit.

This is a challenging course that can be difficult for many students to successfully complete without the right guidance. Signing your student up to work with an AP Physics 1 tutor could be just what they need to unlock more of their potential in this subject area. If you think that your student would benefit from additional assistance with their academic pursuits in this course, then consider contacting us today.

Can AP Physics 1 tutoring help my student prepare for tests?

One of the most important aspects of AP Physics 1 is its final exam, which is typically administered at the end of the school year. The purpose of the exam is to assess how well your student understands the scientific concepts that they learned about while taking their course. They’ll also be tested on their ability to use algebra while solving problems that deal with Newtonian mechanics. Working with an AP Physics 1 tutor is an excellent way for your student to enhance the quality of their study sessions in the lead up to this test.

The exam is administered over a three-hour period, during which time your student will complete two different test sections. The first part of the exam consists of multiple-choice questions in the form of single questions, question sets, and multi-select questions. Your student will answer a total of 50 questions, which will count for 50% of their overall score. Some of the topics that are covered in this portion of the exam include using math to solve science problems, designing experiments, analyzing data, evaluating evidence, and more.

The next part of the exam is a five-question free-response section. Here, your student will answer a total of five questions, which will count for the other 50% of their overall exam score. There are a few different question types that your student will encounter on this section of the exam. For example, they'll need to design an experiment, perform both qualitative and quantitative translations, and respond to short answer questions. These questions will test your student’s ability to interpret and describe models, use math, make connections, work with scientific theories, and more.

Online AP Physics 1 Tutoring review by Beth
The student and I did problems to prepare for his physics test on Tuesday. The student explained that his test would cover vectors, free fall problems, and kinematic problems. He stated that he had the most trouble setting up the equations and problems with two bodies in motion. We discussed vectors. We also did several free fall and two body problems. He often set up the problem correctly but made minor mistakes. I encouraged him to take his time and write down every step. We also work on problems from a recent math quiz in preparation for his math test tomorrow. We worked on completing the square and factoring. We also worked on adding and subtracting fractions and simplifying polynomial fractions. Again, the student often used the correct method to solve problems but made minor mistakes. I encouraged him to slow down, take his time, and be careful with negative signs and parenthesis.

The student is ready for the AP course offered by their HS. We began by introducing vectors and some triangle rules, which they readily remembered from their pre-calculus class. We talked about displacement, speed and velocity and have just begun an introduction to acceleration. Graphing principles, dimensional analysis, sig figs and scientific notation were also reviewed. We plan to meet once a week on Sunday afternoons.

We covered chapter 2 topics, which includes acceleration. We learned equations to determine final and initial velocity, incorporating constant acceleration over a course of time. We went over her homework questions and practice problems in her assigned textbook to help prepare for her upcoming exam.

We went over a few conceptual questions involving forces and tension. We also talked about work and springs for when he will see those topics in the future. He didn't seem to have any issues with solving physics problems, and as he becomes more familiar with the testing style of his teacher I'm sure his grades will improve.

Tonight we focused entirely on kinematics in one dimension. We worked several problems, including ones with changes of axes to make solutions simpler. I explained the basic equations used and some of their interaction, which the student began to understand once we started working actual problems.
