I am studying to get my PhD at the University of Chicago. I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring a variety of ages and subjects (in particular, I have the most experience tutoring for the PSAT, SAT and college admissions essays, as well as math, English literature and Spanish to middle school students). My favorite subject to tutor is Math because it was my favorite as a child and adolescent. I love interacting and getting to know those students with whom I work because I believe that having a good connection and feeling comfortable is a key first step in a successful tutoring relationship. I enjoy walking all over the city and reading (often at the same time), as well as running, sports of all kinds, and coffee over a good conversation.

I am currently a graduate student Johns Hopkins University getting my masters in chemical and biomolecular engineering. I have spent a lot of time around children and I have spent a good amount of time teaching as well. I want all students that I tutor to feel comfortable when I am tutoring them and I believe all students have the ability to improve. I am very comfortable teaching all subjects for grades up to 9th grade and, when dealing with high school courses, I love to tutor most math and science courses including many AP courses. I also have a lot of experience with standardized test prep and love to tutor for that as well. Hobbies: music, running, art, books, writing, reading

I am a rising junior at Vanderbilt University studying chemical engineering and mathematics. Throughout high school, I tutored both individuals and groups in a variety of subjects including algebra and physics. At Vanderbilt, I've had the opportunity to teach at local Nashville elementary and middle schools as part of Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science. I am passionate about tutoring math and science, and even though these subjects are often considered "dry," the right teaching style can spark any student's interest. When it comes to standardized test preparation, I've found that knowing the intricacies of a test can improve a student's score just as much as knowing the subject material can. Different students learn in different ways but that kind of personal attention is difficult to provide in a classroom. With one on one tutoring sessions, any student can excel, even in the subjects he or she has the most trouble in. When I tutor a student, my first goal is to figure out the best way to teach this individual, as no single style can suit everybody. In my free time, I enjoy playing volleyball, watching football and soccer, exercising, and reading about modern science and new technology.

I am a graduate of Brown University, where I earned my B.A. in Literary Arts and Visual Arts, taking courses in a wide array of subjects ranging from contemporary American fiction to ancient Indian classics. My first teaching experience came in college when I had the privilege of creating and teaching a series of literature courses at a local community center. There are few experiences I find more enriching than facilitating a meaningful dialogue centered around great works of literature and art. While literature and art are my passion, I also tutor in variety of other subjects, including math, science, and test preparation. I currently work as a lead teacher in the after-school program at Archway Classical Academy in Phoenix.

I am a rising junior at Princeton University pursuing a Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy with a certificate in Statistics and Machine Learning. I am highly passionate about education: during the academic year, I serve as a volunteer tutor for the Petey Greene Program, which provides educational assistance to those incarcerated in New Jersey prisons; after graduation, I hope to work toward becoming a high school mathematics teacher. This summer, I am interning part-time at IntegrateNYC4me, a nonprofit that seeks to integrate New York schools. I believe that quality educational opportunities should be accessible to all, and I hope to dedicate my career toward realizing this vision!

I am currently a PhD candidate at Northwestern University, studying microbiology and public health (my two biggest passions). I received my Bachelor of Science with high honors from Emory University in 2011, where I double-majored in Biology and Spanish. During my time at Emory, I studied abroad in Australia working on barrier reef and rainforest ecology, and studied in Spain mastering my Spanish language skills. I can read and write Spanish with high proficiency and have tutored Spanish speakers, and received highest scores on the AP Spanish exam with listening. My favorite academic subjects are math and science, and I have received perfect scores on a variety of standardized math exams, including SAT I math, SAT II math IIC subject test, BC calculus AP exam, and the GRE quantitative exam. In addition to tutoring mathematics at all levels, I enjoy tutoring grammar and mechanics, and editing essays. I received the Carlos C. Rojas Excellence in Writing Award from Emory University, and have served on the editorial board for Emory University's undergraduate research journal, as well as have authored peer-reviewed manuscripts at Northwestern University. I have lectured to undergraduate students at Northwestern University in cell biology, and have taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in both a classroom setting and one-on-one. I have a very diverse background of knowledge and have worked in a variety of settings, both academic and in industry, and can meet any of your tutoring needs. I am a very patient person with excellent communication and listening skills who will take the time to get to know each of my tutees. After identifying and recognizing a tutee's own strengths and weaknesses, I can tailor a unique tutoring plan to help each student exceed his or her goals. Frequently Asked Questions
8th grade is a critical transition year where students juggle multiple subjects with increasing rigor. The most common struggles include mastering algebraic thinking in math (moving from concrete arithmetic to abstract equations), synthesizing information across different texts in English, understanding cause-and-effect relationships in science and history, and managing the organizational demands of multiple classes. Many students also hit a wall with multi-step problem solving and struggle to show their work clearly—skills that become essential for high school success.
8th grade math requires a fundamental shift from concrete computation to abstract algebraic reasoning. Students must suddenly work with variables, negative numbers, and multi-step equations—concepts that feel disconnected from the number-focused math of earlier grades. Many students also carry unresolved gaps from 6th or 7th grade (like fraction fluency or order of operations), which compound when they encounter linear equations and systems of equations. Personalized instruction can identify these specific gaps and rebuild foundational skills while moving forward, rather than leaving students to struggle silently.
8th grade writing shifts from personal narrative and simple explanations to analytical and argumentative writing. Students must support claims with evidence, analyze author's purpose, and organize complex ideas across multiple paragraphs. Many struggle with the transition from "telling" to "showing"—using specific examples and quotes rather than general statements. They also face challenges with tone, audience awareness, and revision. A tutor can help students move beyond surface-level writing by teaching them to plan arguments, integrate evidence smoothly, and self-edit for clarity and persuasion.
8th grade science introduces more abstract, interconnected concepts—particularly in earth science and physical science—where students must understand systems and cause-and-effect relationships they can't always observe directly. Students struggle with lab report writing, interpreting data, and applying scientific reasoning to unfamiliar problems. Many also find it difficult to connect isolated facts into broader conceptual frameworks. Personalized tutoring helps students build scientific thinking skills, not just memorize vocabulary, so they can tackle unfamiliar questions on assessments and develop genuine understanding.
The best 8th grade tutors understand both the content and the developmental stage—they know where students typically struggle and why. They should have strong subject knowledge (especially in math and English), experience recognizing learning gaps, and the ability to explain abstract concepts in concrete ways. Excellent 8th grade tutors also understand how to build confidence in students who are hitting new academic challenges, ask questions that prompt thinking rather than just giving answers, and communicate progress clearly to parents. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who have proven expertise in middle school academics and the ability to adapt their teaching to each student's learning style.
8th grade demands a jump in independent organization—managing multiple assignments, long-term projects, and different expectations across classes. Many students struggle with time management, note-taking, and knowing how to study effectively for different subjects. A tutor can teach practical strategies like breaking large assignments into steps, organizing notes by concept, using active recall to study, and creating study schedules. Beyond just homework help, personalized instruction builds metacognitive skills—helping students understand how they learn best and develop habits that will serve them through high school.
Most 8th graders take state standardized assessments in math, English, and science, and some take the PSAT 8/9 to begin building toward college readiness benchmarks. These tests assess not just content knowledge but reasoning skills—the ability to analyze, synthesize, and apply learning to new situations. Tutoring helps students develop test-taking strategies, build confidence with complex multi-step problems, and strengthen the foundational skills that standardized tests measure. Rather than just "teaching to the test," personalized instruction focuses on deep understanding, which naturally translates to stronger performance on assessments.
Whether a student is advanced, on-level, or struggling, personalized instruction meets them where they are. Advanced students benefit from deeper exploration of concepts, more challenging problem types, and preparation for honors high school courses. Students at grade level can strengthen specific weak areas while staying engaged with grade-level material. Struggling students get targeted support for foundational gaps without the pressure of keeping up with the whole class. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who can accelerate, reinforce, or remediate based on your student's specific needs and pace of learning.
