Dan went to school on three days. If there are seven days in the week, then he went to work for the difference between 7 days and 3 days.

We want to know how many more days Dan was at work, so we find the difference between the days at work and the days at school.
Dan was at work for one more day than he was at school.

Mikayla started with $181. The word "spent" in the problem means that we need to subtract the cost of the gloves and the boots from Mikayla's original amount of money. First, we should subtract $12 from $181 ($181 - $12), which equals $169. Next, we need to subtract $87 from $169 ($169 - $87), which equals $82.

Sam had 20 cupcakes at his birthday party. If he gave one cupcake to each of his 12 guests and he ate one, how many cupcakes remained?
Sam and his guests consumed a total of 13 cupcakes. Thus you must subtract 13 from 20 to determine how many cupcakes remained. The correct answer is 7.

Next we subtract 1 from 3 (remember it's 3 now not 4) to get 2 and finally subtract 0 from 1 to get 1. This gives us a final answer of 127.

Treyvon has $90 to buy christmas presents for his parents. He buys a $45 sweater for his father, and a $38 wallet for his mother. How much money does Treyvon have left over?
Since Treyvon is spending money, we need to subtract from his original total.
$90 [original total] - $45 [sweater cost] - $38 [wallet cost] = $7 [money left over]
