How Study Abroad Leads to Great Managers by Yasmine - November 2017 Scholarship Essay

All my life I've tried my hardest to understand other people. I read about other cultures and have lengthy conversations on religion and food with people from all over the world. I won’t say I’m perfect at it, because I’m not. Try as I might, I still find myself stepping on metaphorical toes and tripping over my words. If I could go to another country and experience the culture myself, not just artificially, I could truly understand other people. Their cultures, habits, religious beliefs and traditions.
I think that having the opportunity to study abroad could lead to a gradual harmony with people that will help me, to in turn, help other people. I can help others feel accepted by having prior knowledge on activities and beliefs that are important to them. Already as a high school Senior, I've been able to practice my leadership skills, and help diverse teams of people accomplish great things such as: getting A’s on presentations in our Statistics class or having memorable club meetings.
In college I plan to be a club officer again. My major, Accounting, will also offer opportunities to work with others in a cohesive manner. The more practice I have learning about others and understanding different ways of thinking, the more successful I will be translating that knowledge into constructive behaviors.
I want to be a manager one day, working in the field of business. I know that to be a good manager I will have to learn to approach difficult situations that I may not entirely understand. However, if I prepare myself, and am able to study abroad, I will find that managing office related issues will be a breeze. In today’s age, especially in the U.S. melting pot, it is more important than ever to work towards unity and to be able to peacefully coexist. If I study abroad I will accomplish all this.
