Why is college important to me? by Walter - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
At the start of a very young age, I have understood the meaning of education. The highest level of education for my father is a high school diploma. The high level of education for my mother is “Some College”. Neither of my parents had an opportunity to graduate college and faced many struggles in their personal and professional lives because of this. They committed early in my life to do everything within their power to instill in me a love of learning and an understanding of the importance of hard work and dedication.
Because of their love and sacrifice over the years, I have been able to devote the time and energy necessary to my academic accomplishments even though money has always been tight. In my senior year at Cass Technical High School, I have a 4.07 cumulative grade-point average. In addition to focusing on my studies, I also worked as a Teaching Assistant for Wayne State University Math Corps Summer Bridge and Program and as an Intern for Mercedes-Benz Financial Services throughout my years in high school as a way of contributing to my family's budget.
Additionally, I have also been active in my school and community outside of the classroom, serving on the Academic Games Team as Secretary for two years, serving on the Varsity Tennis Team as Captain for two years, serving as a member of the Burning Bush International Ministries Ignite Youth Group and Choir, serving as an officer in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and The Diverse Students Association at my school, and volunteering at numerous cancer walks, food banks, marathons, etc. during school and school breaks.
My family has made many sacrifices to allow me to focus on my education throughout the school. I now have an opportunity to become the third person in my family to attend college, though I need financial assistance to realize what has been a long-term goal for me and a dream for my parents.
Business. It has been a part of my family for generations. Majoring in Accounting has been a goal of mine for years. It is in my blood. The business has been a dream major of mine because business is used all the time across the world. Business is everywhere. A business degree provides you with multiple opportunities because there are many types of business. That is why I am attending Michigan State University to major in Accounting. Accounting is not only important in the field of business, but it is also necessary for our day-to-day lives as well. I plan to work hard to achieve my goals and become a successful accountant and businessman.
Being a recipient of your prestigious scholarship will motivate me to continue my studies and begin to make my education and service to others my top priority. I will represent your foundation well during my years in college and beyond. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
