Are Leadership skills necessary for college success? by Tyler - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

College Success, does it require leadership skills? Since I will be new to college in the fall I would have to say that from experience there are certain skills that one would need to be successful. One of the first traits as a leader is to know where you want to go or what goals you are trying to achieve. Secondly, preparation is necessary such as researching what classes need to be completed to obtain a certain degree, what college is the best fit for me, and how will I pay for college so I can become a productive member of society. One may also realize they need to change to different aspects of leadership that one has never experienced before such as assertiveness, openness to new ideas, or being creative and thinking out of the box. For example, the character I have established through playing sports has enabled my belief that every challenge in life has a correct method of resolution. Playing with my high school basketball team has taught me this lesson, because in recent years, it has struggled to win many games. With every loss, the challenge to win grew more difficult. I began to see this challenge as a metaphor, with which my life can be directed- for every loss, for every consequence, there is an opportune way to improve my situation. So with skills such as hard work, dedication, persistence and integrity one can succeed in college.

Recently, I have noticed that a considerable portion of my senior class struggling to take initiative in preparation for college. It has come to my attention that I have a considerably higher drive to make it to college and further my education. My family shares a long history in receiving college education. That being said, going to college without the burden of debt is a financial goal I would like to achieve. I am looking to exceed expectations by being one step closer to my goal by earning this scholarship provided by your institution. I plan to attend college and begin my career in the Business Finance field, and Accounting is the profession in which I hope to graduate with a degree. Through learning this trade, I could become more like my father. My father is a personal hero of mine; I inherit many characteristics of his, including his love of finance. My school hosts a Future Business Leaders of America program, in which I have held the office of Treasurer. This office has given me insight on the program and allowed me opportunities that motivate me with my college education in my desired field.
