My Ten Year Plan by Tristen - March 2020 Scholarship Essay
I plan to attend East Stroudsburg University’s speech language pathology program which is a five-year program. I plan to minor in special education. In my sophomore year I will apply to the SLP program. I will obtain my teaching certificate and apply for my license upon completion of graduate school.
While attending ESU, I plan to try-out for the cheer team and get involved in campus clubs and activities. I am very interested in getting involved with special-need children and inner-city school district volunteer opportunities. I believe this will help me to collaborate with like-minded people, learn more about the students and the opportunities that exist in these schools. My professional goals are to work as a school-based speech therapist for elementary and high school students with communication, speech, cognitive, feeding and swallowing difficulties.
I would like to work for a small school district although I plan to be flexible with my options. If I am not able to obtain a job working in a school district right out of college, I plan to work in either an out-patient setting or a skilled nursing home.
As an extra-curricular activity, I am interested in forming a special needs cheer team in the district I work in as a SLP. There are teams like this in my area and I believe it is so important for children with special needs to be involved. I can use my skills and love of cheer-leading along with my knowledge of special-needs children to fulfill this dream.
