How My Zodiac Killer Project Sparked My Curiosity by Amari - October 2026 Scholarship Essay
An academic project that sparked my curiosity and helped me develop a deeper understanding of a subject was my research project on the Zodiac Killer. Before starting this project, I knew very little about the case beyond the fact that the Zodiac Killer was a serial killer who was never identified. As I began researching, I became interested in learning more about the case, the evidence investigators collected, and the reasons it remains unsolved. What started as a school assignment turned into an opportunity to explore my interest in criminal justice and understand how important investigation and critical thinking are when solving crimes.
As I worked on my project, I learned that investigating a crime involves more than simply finding a suspect. Investigators have to collect evidence, examine facts, look for patterns, and consider different possibilities before reaching a conclusion. The Zodiac Killer case introduced me to the challenges law enforcement faces when dealing with limited evidence and/or information. I also became interested in how investigators analyze letters, clues, and other evidence to try to identify the person who is responsible for a crime. This helped me understand that even the smallest detail can be very important during an investigation.
The project also taught me the importance of patience and paying attention to details. I realized that solving a case isn't always quick or straightforward. Investigators have to be willing to look at information from different perspectives and avoid making assumptions without evidence to support said assumption. Learning about the Zodiac Killer case showed me how difficult it can be to find answers when there is incomplete evidence and when new information creates a conflict. It also made me appreciate the dedication and careful work required in a criminal investigation.
Most importantly, this project deepened my interest in forensic science and crime scene investigation. I became curious about how physical evidence is collected, preserved, and analyzed to help investigators understand what happened at a crime scene. I wanted to learn more about the different techniques used to examine evidence and how science can help connect information that might seem unrelated. This curiosity encouraged me to think more seriously about a future career in criminal justice, especially in crime scene investigation.
Overall, my Zodiac Killer project taught me that learning about a subject can lead to new interests and goals. It helped me develop my research skills, think more critically, and recognize the importance of evidence in finding the truth. It also showed me that there's always more to learn, even about a case that has been studied for decades. This experience reminded me that curiosity can be the beginning of discovering a passion. I hope to continue building my knowledge and skills so I can contribute to investigations and help others find answers through careful, accurate, and responsible work.
