The Perks of Going to College by Trevor - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
The part of the college experience that I will be most thankful for cannot be limited to one thing in my opinion. Of course getting an education that will enable me to do what I will truly enjoy in life is the main objective. However, there are many other moments and memories that I am looking forward to.
I am an only child that has grown up in a small town. I am truly looking forward to meeting new people and making lifetime friendships. I am excited to experience the diversity and open minds of other individuals that are different than myself.
I have been fortunate enough to have a "stay-at-home" mom during all of my school years, but unfortunately, I have come to be a bit dependent upon her. I am probably going to develop a whole new appreciation for her when I go to college, but I am certain that getting out on my own and being 100% responsible will help me discover new strengths that I didn't know that I had. The longest I have ever been away from home has been a week, so going away to school will be eye opening. At this point in my life, I feel ready to embrace change and start with a clean slate.
I am anxious to be a part of groups and events that I have never been a part of before. I can't wait to begin finding my true niche in life and I believe that college will be one of the greatest stepping stones in doing so.
In all, I would have to say that I am thankful for just simply the experience of going to college--period. For me, it is a luxury and I am grateful for the opportunity that has been afforded to me. Neither of my parents attended college, so this is a very big deal for them. The fact that I get to fulfill my dreams and make my family proud at the same time is a huge bonus.
