Hope by Travis - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

There is only one word that would describe why I wish to attend college and that would be the simple syllable word, hope. I chose the word hope because it stands for both I am as a person and for my ambitions. Life has always struck me hard and thus the impact it created molded me into the person I am today. At the age of eight my grandmother passed away leaving me and my mother homeless for a period of time.

It was that word hope that allowed me to sleep comfortably as it wrapped me in its warmth. It was that same hope four years later that comforted me as I sat alone and abandoned as the paramedics worked to resuscitate my mother, but to no avail. It was during this period of my life that I was plagued with depression and extreme sorrow, and I often found myself completing suicide. However it was the little glimmer of hope that all would work out that helped lead me out of that forlorn time in my life.

Since then I have been dedicated to better myself and others, and to serve as hope as many have done for me. My mothers death as well as other challenging experiences resulted in both a blessing and a curse. These events have allowed me to form a new view on life and that is where college comes in. Higher education is hope for it allows me to form the proper connections and platform to secure a bright future.

College is hope for a poverty stricken family such as mine to better themselves and situation they are in. That is why the best word to describe college or any form of higher education for that matter is hope. Its a Willy Wonka golden ticket to a future one worth living and fighting for.
