Fearless by Tiffany - November 2013 Scholarship Essay

Trying new things is something that not only requires effort, but courage as well. When I first started high school, my mom always told me to try and get myself out into the world in a way that reflects who I am and what my personality is like. At first I didn’t really think too much on what she meant. Only shortly after I’d found out that I’d made the cheerleading squad my freshman year did I finally understand.

“You’re a cheerleader now? But you’re so quiet!” was something that I was constantly told by my fellow classmates. It was true that I wasn’t the most talkative individual that they’d all met back in middle school. But hey, that was the past. I was in a bigger school that held even bigger opportunities. Why not take advantage of them? Of course, a majority of the activities I planned on participating in meant that I’d have to crack open my introvert shell and open up to people more; to show everyone that I do in fact exist. So to prove myself I tried out for tennis, went out for several clubs, tried out for the school play, became involved with band, and even went on to participate in the town pageant. The outcomes of each of these activities were, to sum it all up, positive experiences in the long run. People, students and teachers alike, accepted me for who I was from then on out, and it was all because I had a faint curiosity of all of the things that I never thought I could ever do.

We’re all human, therefore we all have fears. Whether it’s of bugs, failure, or public speaking, these things are a part of us. But just because they are a part of us doesn’t mean they need to control our lives. It takes effort to face these fears head on, but it takes courage to scare them away. My name is Tiffany, and I am fearless when it comes to trying new things.
