Life is a Roller Coaster by Tiarra - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Life is full of different experiences just like a roller coaster. Life gives you unexpected twists and turns especially within college. College is meant to be one of the most challenging experiences of your life, but it does not have to be. By using important leadership skills such as confidence, being proactive, and organized. With a little under a year of college under my belt, I have experienced many different events where leadership skills were necessary to become successful in and outside of the classroom; therefore, leadership is a skill anyone and everyone can obtain.

During the first week of college, it is full of fast transitions of sitting in harder classes as well as not knowing anyone in your classes. By being confident, this transition is made easier. Within the classroom setting, by being outgoing making friends makes classes easier. Becoming more comfortable in class as well as more confident on upcoming homework. Outside of the classroom, confidence is necessary on putting yourself out there to make new friends. During the beginning of your freshman year, everyone is on the same boat as you: friendless as well as nervous. Overall, confidence is the key to success in college.

As the first semester continues with your already established confidence, classes begin to get harder, but by being proactive, classes become obtainable. When being proactive it ties along with organization. With multiple, tedious classes, organization is necessary to make sure you complete all assignments and studying for tests on time. As big tests come up, procrastination should never happen because cramming for tests never works. By being proactive, college becomes easier with the leadership skills you obtain.

Outside of the classroom, there are many different campus organizations that need leaders to help them become successful on campus. With my first year at college I joined the SAAC club. This club helps organize and bring together collegiate athletes with non-collegiate athletes. Even though I am not the president or secretary, my leadership skills are still needed to help the club flourish. When creating different events for our club each member has to be organized, confident, and proactive with each given task.

All in all, with each twist and turn of college as well as life after college, leadership skills will always be important to being successful in life. The leadership skills I found most important to me are confidence, being proactive, as well as organization.
