Mother by Taylor - September 2015 Scholarship Essay

I was awake when my mother overdosed. I lost my innocence on that night. The night when she took one too many pills and drank one too many drinks. She trapped me between herself and the gray wall. My mother turned her face away from me and eventually took her last breath. It is because of this horrific tragedy that I knew my life would never be a waste. My life would mean something to someone one day. I was going to make a difference. I was going to become someone's hero.

I am a high school senior with high hopes of one day becoming a Social Worker. I want to put on a metaphorical cape each day and save the lives of young children. I want to save them from laying in bed, squished between a gray wall and a mother who overdoses on prescription pills and alcohol.

It seems to be tragic that through this, I've learned to be a better student. However, I know to achieve my dreams of preventing this horrific scene for kids, I MUST push myself beyond others to get into the best college. This way I can be the best social worker for my community, and save the innocence of young ones.
