The Greatest Writer in English History, William Shakespeare by Taylor - February 2015 Scholarship Essay
In high school, I believe that reading becomes a necessity for achieving success. Without reading our understanding will begin to diminish drastically and we will have no comprehension of how others view specific scenarios. Although sometimes students complain about constantly having to read novels, dramas, or documentaries, I believe that this is a fundamental part of learning. Furthermore, I believe that we can not only read novels that we display personal interest, but also books that give us a closer look at how things were in our history. Under these circumstances, I believe that every student should read at least one work of Shakespeare by the time that they graduate.
Shakespeare lived in the late 16th century and died in the early 17th century. During this short time period he wrote and composed various playwrights that have dramatically influenced the English language today. Unfortunately, sometimes it is difficult to understand what Shakespeare is discussing, because the language was drastically different from our speech today. Moreover, it causes students to truly learn how to interpret what he discusses in his dramas. The English language has changed immensely over the last few centuries, and I think that students who are ignorant to the beautiful works of Shakespeare do not realize this.
William Shakespeare is in fact considered the greatest writer of the English language and I definitely agree with this statement. Shakespeare was able to feel and experience so many different emotions in his lifetime. Not only was he able to experience them, but also had the ability to put them into a novel, drama, or playwright so that others could undergo these same emotions. Oftentimes it is difficult for people to express their feelings; however, I believe that if you personally cannot explain the way that you feel, Shakespeare can do it for you. He has a way of uncovering the truth behind our happiness and sadness, or any emotion that we encounter.
Overall, I think Shakespeare is a wonderful writer. Every student should read at least one of William Shakespeare’s works before they graduate, because I believe that they will discover so much about themselves and the English language itself. Also, Shakespeare’s writings allow people to utilize their imagination of how different times were back then in comparison to now. Everyone has a vision of what history was like in the 16th century, but I believe that Shakespeare gives us a greater picture of some of the events that truly took place.
As a high school senior, I have read multifarious works of Shakespeare’s, my favorite being The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. However, each and every one of his playwrights are incredibly different, that each one can give you a different perspective on life, history, and English. This is why I believe that high school students should read a work of William Shakespeare’s before they graduate.
